As of the 1970s, teddy bears have become collector's items around the world. And some teddies have sold for tens of thousands of dollars if not more. The question is why are people willing to pay such prices for a toy? The answer lies in a few commonalities.

Top-selling teddy bears have the following attributes in common: low production, they commemorate a special occasion, and in one case, is the sole surviving example, according to Jacquie Denny, co-founder of EVERYTHING BUT THE HOUSE (EBTH).

Plus, teddy bears have an emotional appeal to their owners, so they are willing to pay top dollar for early examples, Denny added, regardless of condition. With that, the teddy bears on this list range from a low of about $3,000 to a high of $143,000 for the Steiff Teddy Girl Bear.

Made in 1930, the Dicky Bear was made to be a low-cost bear to face the financial issues caused by the Great Depression. This bear was an engagement gift in the same year and treasured for a lifetime before being auctioned at Christie鈥檚 in 2007.
