Everybody has imagined being a part of the Warhammer 40k universe. Whether a Space Marine, a Guardsman, or even… a Xenos? But how about a Rogue Trader, an individual with the power to explore and conquer distant worlds in the name of the Imperium? I recently got a copy of Warhammer 40: Rogue Trader and I’ve been doing exactly that! So is Rogue Trader the kind of game for you?
The Gameplay
Let’s start with gameplay. Rogue Trader can best be described as being remarkably similar to other titles such as Baldur’s Gate or BattleTech. I’d like to break this part down by its RPG elements and then its combat. The game has many things that RPG gamers will love, such as skills, parties, and consequence-based decision-making. Every character can be very customizable, both in terms of looks and background. You pick what kind of world you’ve come from, your career, and your class, with each choice having unique perks associated with it. Beset on all sides by terrifying bugs, bots, and aliens who yearn nothing more than to demolish Super Earth, it's a galactic war of attrition—a Warhammer 40K-esque meat grinder that sees you firing clone after clone into enemy-infested planets to meet bloody and, often rather explosive, ends. It doesn't always feel appreciate that, though.
I myself have spent *checks watch* 300 hours fostering galactic peace and freedom through hot lead, and I've certainly hit a point where the game isn't really tough anymore. You drop into a Super Helldive with a bunch of max level comrades, you maybe lose a couple of lives, but total failure is almost entirely a thing of the past. It all feels lovely controlled, manageable, and not at all like you're fighting a desperate wa
