Back in June, the Oak Hill Chamber of Commerce officials unveiled what they dubbed as  “The World’s Largest Acorn” in the Village of Oak Hill. The giant metal sculpture of art can be found in Central Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

However, since that period, a battle for the title has arisen.

The Silver Spring Historical Society located in Silver Spring, Maryland made a announce on Wednesday, Aug. 6, on social media claiming that its roughly 175-year-old, acorn-shaped gazebo, located in Acorn Urban Park at 8060 Newell St., Silver Spring, MD, is actually “The World’s Largest Acorn.” The group has gone as far as measuring and compar

Ohio’s collection of “The World’s Largest” things just got a little bigger.

On Saturday, June 14, the Oak Hill Area Chamber of Commerce unveiled “The World’s Largest Acorn” sculpture to the community, which has been years in the making. The giant metal sculpture can be found in Central Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

“This project is one that the Chamber is very excited about because it will give people a BIG reason to visit Oak Hill,” stated Oak Hill Chamber President Kurtis Strickland. “I have visited many of The World’s Largest and Smallest Things in my travels around this great country and nearly all of them are in sm

Ohio’s collection of “world’s largest” things is growing

The Village of Oak Hill is small. Just about 1,400 people live in the southern Ohio town.

But soon, it’ll house a colossal attraction: the world’s largest acorn.

“The idea first came about during my personal travels,” said Kurtis Strickland, president of the local chamber of commerce.

He and his family have stopped to see the world’s largest ball of twine, rocking chair, working chainsaw and turkey.

“And so that's what gave me the initial idea of, why can't we have the world's largest something?”

A gargantuan acorn seemed a logical fit.

“We were established by the Welsh back in the 1800s,” Strickland said. “They stopped and settled Oak Hill because of all the white oak trees surrounding the town.”

Today, the school’s acorn-headed mascot, Archie, pays tribute to the tree. And soon, a giant sculpture will too.

The metal acorn, measuring 12 feet in diameter, is set to be unveiled in the village’s center this spring. Once assembled, Strickland says the figure will oust a sculpture in North Carolina — that measures a measly 10 feet across — to take the title of “World’s Largest Acorn.”

But the jumbo acorn is har
