Den Of Thieves 2's World Diamond Center Heist & Real World Inspiration
Christian Gudegast followed his directorial debut action hit Den of Thieves with Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, which featured a high-stakes diamond heist that was based heavily on one of the biggest real-world heists ever accomplished. Starring Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson, Jr. reprising their roles from the original Den of Thieves, the sequel sees the cop and criminal team up to take down one of the most secure facilities in the world, the World Diamond Center. In the process, they run afoul of both the Mafia and the Pantera Task Force, both of whom are hot on their heels.
The original Den of Thieves chronicled the cat-and-mouse game between Butler's alcoholic LASD officer Nick "Big Nick" O'Brien going toe-to-toe with Pablo Schreiber's former MARSOC leader Ray Merrimen, only to reveal that O'Shea Jackson, Jr.'s Donnie Wilson was the mastermind behind the robbery of the LA Federal Reserve. Donnie steps his game up in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, putting together an international diamond heist that makes the Federal Reserve robbery look like child's play. The search for the perfect diamond – a symbol of eternal love and the quest for perfection – has always been associated with the city of Antwerp. A place of profound importance for the international diamond trade, Belgium’s biggest port has rightfully earned its place as the capital of the world’s diamond business.
Antwerp has been known as the diamond capital of the world for several centuries, a title that hasn’t been easily earned. The diamond trade in the port started nearly 500 years ago when the first rough stones were brought over from India. Gradually, local diamond traders rose to prominence with their attention to detail and exuberant selection until even the King of France, François I, started ordering his diamonds from the master cutters in Antwerp rather than in Paris.
Established in 1973, the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) is one of the world’s most renowned private companies that officially represents and coordinates the Antwerp diamond sector. Located in heart of Antwerp in the Hovenie
"Reel Reviews: ‘Den of Thieves 2’ offers beautiful French Riviera as a backdrop for theft" by: Jessica Shepard
I’m not going to lie to you – I didn’t think there was a need for a sequel to 2018’s “Den of Thieves” movie.
I just lumped it into one of those momentarily fun action flicks that wasn’t overly memorable.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of movies like that in my book.
I caught “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” in theaters last week and found it served up the same fare as its predecessor.
Sometimes it feels like Hollywood goes through the basic motions and try to cram a streaming or straight-to-video-release into theaters when it’s lackluster.
Pantera has a great backdrop in the French Riviera for its heist this time, but the action isn’t terribly remarkable and feels a bit fond of it wants to be a “Fast and Furious” movie.
The only really cool thing is that it was inspired by an actual event - the 2003 Antwerp diamond heist.
Pantera is an American heist production that serves as the sequel to the 2018 film Den of Thieves.
